W17 100 Years of Route 66

with Susan Ohmer, Ph.D.

July 8th to August 5th, 2026

$35 More Info

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of this all-American highway, we will explore novels, films, and TV programs that anchor stories along this historic cross-country road. From films such as "Easy Rider "and "Cars", and novels ranging from "The Grapes of Wrath” to "The Forgotten Road", Route 66 has beckoned drivers west to destinations that promise new opportunities and ways of living. Launched in the 1920s during the first decades of the automobile, Route 66 has come to represent much more than a highway: it is a symbol of freedom, the wild west, and the American dream. For readings, the instructor will provide digital copies, and we will watch films and film clips in class.
