Wed55 A Holy Trinity: Plato, St. Augustine, Heidegger

with Chris Miller, M.A.

September 16th to November 18th, 2026

$55 More Info

Plato is, by all accounts, the father of Western thought. His thought engendered St. Augustine, the Prodigal Son whose soul gazing led him to leave off Platonism to return to the Father. Heidegger is the restless spirit, hovering above, drawing all to the Father. Three are one in speaking of the holy. We propose a course in history, philosophy, religion, and spirituality(hint: Heidegger's work). We will move from the darkness of Plato's cave into the light of questioning (the piety of thought) those sacred cows that trap, as amber does the fly. We will read Plato's Republic, Augustine's Confession, a bit of Heidegger, Buy a cheap copy: Plato's Republic; Augustine's Confessions.

Bring a needlework project (if you have one in the works) and gather in as we weave through a sartorial history that takes us from the paleolithic string skirt to the string bikinis of St. Tropez. We’ll look at who makes our clothing and explore how the clothes we wore down through the ages have fitted us for work and play, for heaven and hell. We’ll leaf through the catalog of threads that occasioned scandal, fomented revolution, unraveled empires, and made gala-goers gaga for Gucci. Food, fabric, fun and fashion.
